Daniel Jones needed something, anything, to salvage this night, to build on for the start of his put-up-or-shut-up season. He had been weighed down in his first preseason start, held down yet again by an offensive line that has still not been fixed, and a left tackle who looks nothing like the fourth-overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft, by key weapons who haven’t played a lick all summer, and he had just rolled right and thrown an egregious end-zone interception on third down from the New England 1 to cornerback D’Angelo Ross that served as an ominous warning that he has and will have little or no margin for error this season. He had engineered four drives, with fits and starts and one pretty 22-yard throw across the field on third down to Sterling Shepard, one near-interception, unable to sustain success, and failed to finish and get his team in the end zone. But finally, when he was given time to stand tall in the pocket, he began to resemble the franchise quarterback the franchise so dearly and desperately believes in: a beautiful 23-yard TD strike to TE Kaden Smith to cap a nine-play, 58-yard drive. Jones (17-for-22, 135 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT) was 7-for-8 on his two-minute drive for 55 yards against Bill Belichick’s reserves, while also scrambling out of bounds for 4 yards on third-and-2 preceding his TD pass. Thankfully, the sky didn’t fall on Daniel Jones when Joe Judge removed the Bubble Wrap and let him play the first half of Patriots 22, Giants 20. The question now remaining with the Broncos on tap for the Sept. 12 regular-season opener: Can the sky possibly be the limit for him with this offensive line? First of all, it is understood that Saquon Barkley and the new toys the Giants secured to play with Jones — Kenny Golladay, No. 1 draft choice Kadarius Toney and TE Kyle Rudolph — barely practiced in training camp, and didn’t play a snap in the preseason games. “Our job is to be ready,” Jones said. “I’m confident those guys’ll be ready to go.” And second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth of all, Jones’ offensive linemen, particularly Thomas, will remain guilty until proven innocent. Guilty until they show that the offensive line is no longer a giant Achilles’ heel. Jones’ first series, a three-and-out, was sabotaged when OLB Josh Uche beat Thomas to the outside for a sack. “There’s a lot of things I need to work on,” Thomas said. Thomas was victimized on the second series when Jones held the ball a tad too long and was sacked again. “It’s not always on that one player’s shoulders,” Judge said. At least it’s easier to defend a player who resists giving Giants boobirds a thumbs down, right? “I have to step up and do what I have to do,” Thomas said. The game plans will be different once the bullets start flying, the shackles Judge and offensive coordinator Jason Garrett placed on Jones on Sunday night will be removed, so there’s that. But there’s also this: Engram left with a calf injury and WR Darius Slayton left with ankle and foot injuries. The nightmare scenario, of course, was always this: Daniel Jones, sprawled on the ground following a fifth sack surrendered by his offensive line, Ronnie Barnes and the medical team rushing onto the field to tend to him. Jones survived, and lived to tell about it. “I think I’ve improved, and made progress,” he said. He’s a tough kid, mentally and physically, a resilient kid. Thats a big problem is that Jones has his own issues and marry that with the issues with the OL that leads to what we are seeing. If the OL gives him time he can do stupid shit. If the OL breaks down at times he can do some good things. There is literally no room for error. Thats huge because every play is SO critical. With that in the back of Jones' mind he tries to hard and compounds with dumbass plays like last night.

Jones is part of the problem as much as the OL. They feed off each other's miscues.
Jones cant save the OL and vice versa.

I thought our backup that noone likes looked a lot more aware of the field - it honestly looked the other way around to me, like captain checkdown jones was the backup and glennon was the starter - but i get it, glennon was playing against the patriots backups, too
kinda typical jones, flashes some great potential, with a whole lot of mediocre, and some horrible mistakes thrown in for good measure.
the kid just doesnt see the whole field, thats the bottom line biggest concern to me.
i think he'll be better with the turnovers, i saw him cover up and protect the ball a few times, but he just doesnt seem to see everyone out there, his own guys or the defense.

Exactly in a real game that turnover and some other issues like drops from top 4 WRs lost that game, it is preseason but they need to sure it up. That pick was a 10 point swing keeping 7 off the board and adding three for them, Slaytons drop negated a first down at the pats 25 more points off the board, plenty of blame to go around Gano misses a 41 yarder. I like Judge but he has to stabilize the OL room for good coaches and players, he needs to be on these guys to many drops I know most of them were with guys like Bachman but Slayton had this issue last year also. They have a lot of work to do to be a competitive NFL squad. |

This. The OL excuse is no longer warranted. The Gettleman defenders supported his decision that “the current OL is fine.” “If the staff believes it’s fine then it’s fine.” They’ve defended this OL as a unit and it’s individual parts. Jones got all these weapons around him. No more excuses. The Jury is definitely out on Jones and I would say there is a better chance that he isn't a franchise QB at this point but c'mon with this comment. What weapon did Jones have playing against the Pat's number 1's yesterday that ANY other team would really want?.... Shepard? I don't even think another team would give the Giants a 4th rounder at this point. Slyaton? With that stupid drop and regression last year? Anyone? The Patriots formed a steel wall around Mac Jones and Cam Newton and Jones had a better game than those 2 under duress with no weapons.... |

Jones got Molly Whopped last night knocked silly several times big hits. the positive he held the ball and kept delivering the negative trying to do to much he got picked, if he is going to be hit game after game like that #1. he will not last to see what he has. #2. he will end up with David Carr / Eli Manning syndrome Giants need to get this straight and get it straight now. The excuses are all but used up for Jones. He threw a boneheaded interception in the red zone, that’s inexcusable. He missed Booker on a slant that would have negated a sack. He also had another would be interception that would have been a pick 6. He finally got his head out of his ass once the Patriots took out their starters. The only encouraging sign for Jones is, he throws a pretty spiral. Other than that, this kid has disaster written all over him.
The line did him no justice, but that excuse has been beaten to death. This is the NFL, where you have to make plays no matter what the circumstances are. This kid needs everything going right to be pedestrian.

These guys have to look the ball into their hands every single time. |

He basically had the same offensive weapons he had last year, and yet another patchwork ol. Josh Allen had a great 3rd year partly because they improved everything around him. DJ still hasn't had any of the new fa, draft picks and saquon to play with. Am I concerned? Yes. But you can't surround him with the same mediocracy and expect him to suddenly become superman. |

Bright side about this game. He held onto the ball after taking some shots. That alone is improvement. Jones will get his TD's but the coaches need to burn it into this kids brain to throw the ball away and take the points if nothing is there. The Giants Offense isn't good enough to dig themselves out of holes, at least early in the season before the offense can come together. |

Allen has worked his butt off to overcome some big flaws that said he has benefited from a stable environment around him coaching has been the same from day 1 front office is in lock step with these coaches getting them what they need, It's a big deal in QBs development to get whats around him right the Giants didn't do that the Bills did. |

What quarter did that miss occur and what happened? Also, I've said multiple times in this thread alone that I'm like 35% to 40% convinced that Jones can be a franchise QB so you aren't conversing with a homer at all. I've also mentioned that that Interception was indefensible and he has to learn to throw it away and avoid turnovers in the endzone. I have a sneaking suspicion that Jones is one of the highest in the league when it comes to turnovers in the endzone but don't have the analytics to back that feeling up. |

They go hand in hand until one is fixed the other can't be or can't be accurately assessed right now it is like they are starting out with less weapons then they had last year and the OL has given back everything they gained the last 8 games. |

How Jones reads a defense. How Jones goes through a progression. How Jones locks on to a receiver/makes predictable throws. How he calls out protection audibles. These are all on display regardless of who is around him. Hope I'm wrong but me thinks we are heading for some upheaval in the front office the only reason I want to be wrong is because that will mean we suck still. On the other hand if they hire someone competent, there is talent on the roster and plenty of draft capital to get what needs be done done. If these guys love their coach they better get going because he might get swept with the GM. |

I agree with most or all of what you said and it's like a catch 22 I guess. I just hope we don't see a scenario where we need a QB and upfront focus on the OL this offseason. I mean I think either way even if the OL plays decent or well, we will still need a few more pieces.

This kid needs everything going right to be pedestrian. that last line, "this kid needs everything going right to be pedestrian" that says a lot. thats the problem, hes gonna have to step up and make things happen out of nothing sometimes. not excusing the oline, either, but if it can be even marginally better than it was second half of last season, jones has to do something with that. yesterday, with all the checkdowns, i was waiting for some 'real' plays, and we barely really got any. there was a decent throw to shep on the outside on 3rd, and the td pass was really nice, nice touch, but beyond that there wasnt much to analyze. its been my fear that we'll be halfway through the season and itll be like that, still waiting for things to open up. i thought all the checkdowns was a bit odd, like a preseason game, youd want to see more, take some shots. we either werent open, or jones just never saw it, |

Tell me one thing that has improved around DJ so far? Name one thing on the offense we was any better than last year? The OL looks worse than the end of the season last year. He basically had the same WRs and TEs as last year. Again, I'm not making excuses for him. But he's not going to progress faster with junk around him. |

Josh Allen had a great 3rd year partly because they improved everything around him. DJ still hasn't had any of the new fa, draft picks and saquon to play with. Am I concerned? Yes. But you can't surround him with the same mediocracy and expect him to suddenly become superman. You can also evaluate Jones’ fundamentals without having certain personnel on the field. How Jones reads a defense. How Jones goes through a progression. How Jones locks on to a receiver/makes predictable throws. How he calls out protection audibles. These are all on display regardless of who is around him. LT - No QB could develop behind this abomination that we call an OL. In fact, the 3 best QB's in the league wouldn't be contenders behind this Oline. You think Rodgers, Mahomes, Brady or Jackson's teams would be super bowl contenders when their starting LT gives up 2 sacks and a hold in 1/2 of play? The Giants have a fundamental problem. Let's say Jones shits the bed this year and they want to replace him with a good potential fit. I would be ok with that decision. Do they do it knowing that their line is in disarray, need to give up multiple picks, and they new QB might not develop because he is running for his life on more than 50% of his plays. There is no hope in developing a QB when your Oline is ranked 32 of 32 or 31 of 32. Edit - the Giants have cemented their position as the Cleveland Browns of the last half decade.... |

The excuses are all but used up for Jones. He threw a boneheaded interception in the red zone, that’s inexcusable. He missed Booker on a slant that would have negated a sack. He also had another would be interception that would have been a pick 6. He finally got his head out of his ass once the Patriots took out their starters. The only encouraging sign for Jones is, he throws a pretty spiral. Other than that, this kid has disaster written all over him. The line did him no justice, but that excuse has been beaten to death. This is the NFL, where you have to make plays no matter what the circumstances are. This kid needs everything going right to be pedestrian. He has a year to sink or swim, he still hasn't played with any top flight weapons or protection, who ever is doing the drafting in April will need to get that straight along with the QB assuming he sinks. |
