I like the hire . He has been a part of some good defensive. Was the Giants Dline good in 2016? I don;t remember off hand. probably better than recent years . Good enough for the defense to lead NYG into the playoffs. I remember Dak being under duress and misfiring in the 2nd 'Boys game that year.

It's on twitter and wikipedia so it must be true.

The #Giants have a new DC. They spent the least amount of money on defense in the entire league ($46.8 million, per OverTheCap) last season. (Raiders 2nd least at $54.5M, Ravens most at $94.5M). James Bettcher joins Pat Shurmur on the scapegoat block.
Pat Leonard added, Tom Pelissero Verified account @tompelissero The #Giants are hiring Patrick Graham as their defensive coordinator, source said. 18 replies 2 retweets 17 likes
Yeah..Shurmur and Betcher are scapegoats... Leonard is obviously a Mara and Gettleman hater. Talent level was absurdly lacking on OL...and all of the defense. Betcher did not forget to coach...nor did Matt Ruhle vs Georgia while having Pickens problems, and the other whiz kid Lincoln Riley... it's called being overwhelmed talent wise. But we all got the next Super Bowl hopes, and that's all that matters.....for now.

On the surface I like it. I like Joe found a guy that believes in his vision on multiple fronts and versatile players. I also have the feeling by midseason we get the usual this defense needs to be simplified for the players to excel as we had with almost every DC we hired going back to Fewell.

Posters like yourself would have had a shit fit in the old days when Parcell's was hired and named a young nobody named Bill Belichick as HC and DC wayback when. I don't think Belichick ever worked with Parcells or the Giants in the past. Obviously you are a young fan. You will need to get brushed up on this stuff or these guys will eat you alive. BB was considered a nobody when Parcells(much like BB did for NYG) got a suggestion to give BB a chance on his staff. BB quickly proved himself culminating with his defensive game plan vs the high flying "K gun" Bills in the SB(after the 1990 season). I strongly suggest you find the "Bill and Bill" show that was run on the NFL network. It will clear up a few things. It is pretty well known that BB remains forever grateful to NYG and Parcells for giving a relative unknown an opportunity to work 24 hrs a day and prove himself. Most of us see the recommendation of Judge as possibly the next little known gem with a possibly high ceiling.

It is telling that Graham would leave Miami FL( and a rising HC also from NE) to come to the Giants and attach his future success to Judge--for a lateral move.

Like how the coaching staff is getting younger. Don't know much about this guy, and quite frankly I don't need to. Anything would be better than the debacle that was Bettcher. My main worry was not keeping the 3-4 and that appears as if it'll stay in tact, which is really huge. Looking forward to what this new coaching staff can do.

Yeah, I think that the "coaches need to be teachers" was as close to a "shot" that we were going to hear. I think it was directed at all the youngsters on defense and what they can become.

Not a fan of this hire at all. An inexperienced head coach hires a coach who has one total years of coaching at defensive coordinator? This has disaster written all over it..

Another Patriots guy, I'm assuming we're sticking with a 3-4 I honestly don't know what to expect from Judge and now Graham which could be a good thing actually. I kinda like we're going with NEW YOUNG GUYS and not these Old Recycled/Retreads. I wasn't all that crazy about Wade Phillips and I hope we don't bring in Jason Garrett as the OC either

It is questionable for sure.
Also, how is it the Giants were able to hire this guy away from Miami laterally?

Good question. I see the Dolphins promoted Josh Boyer to DC. I get that the Dolphins traded away all their players especially on the defensive side of the ball. But Graham was part of one of the worst defenses in the league last year. He made Bettcher look like Buddy Ryan. I’m sold on Judge, but no way in hell am I sold with this hire.

It's critical that he surrounds himself with an excellent staff, and he's already acknowledged the importance of having veteran coaches to assist him.
Perhaps he'll hire himself a seasoned assistant head coach?

I hope so. As we all know a young inexperienced head coach needs to surround himself with good experienced men. We will see the common mistakes this upcoming season with Judge, he’s learning on the job. My case would have been hire guys you can trust which he must with Graham and have them help you. If I see Kitchens picked up on our staff (his good friend) I’m going to be pissed..

If you're sold on Judge (I dont know how yet), then you should be sold on this guy given Judges intro presser about getting the right guys to fill these roles. Personally, this guy is just as much a risk as Judge. Not much experience. And the Dolphins D last year was not that good.

For a better word my gut or a hunch with Judges background and what he said in the press conference he can be a good coach. But who the hell knows, they could both be bums and we start reminiscing the days of Shurmur in a year or two. But, I don’t like this hire. I value the hell out of our defense. It’s our backbone of our franchise. And we hired this guy? Who knows, he could be another great DC, or just another guy who will be looking for work at some point.
