This is not a coaching issue, this is about execution. Too many miscues against a fantastic defense. Come on , think about it it. That was the best cornerback tandem in football. The best defensive line in football. The best covering Lbs in football. Things are going to happen. The coaching staff should at least put u in a position to win and thats what happened. First game rust maybe but their were a hell of a lot of plays where I saw some people not finishing off their blocks such as Engram, some Wrs, and of course some Oline. I expect Shurmur to put the team on notice and show the film. Engram should be put on blast almost as much as the Flowers kid. He has a lot of issues (dropped passes, poor blocking, being an easy tackle by smaller guys) out there today. He needs to get that straightened out. He could be one of the be TEs in the game but he has to get aggressive.

Who is this guy Clay and why was he on the field there? I have a problem with the decision to even have him on the field. Clay is another Gettleman flunkie brought in atthe last minute. He is an experienced return guy but that is what you get when you bring in players at the last second who have not been a part of your process. It was a mistake having him there in week 1 The thing is I'd been watching during the game how he didn't like to fair catch and was taking chances in traffic. I even commented to someone I watching the game with. I felt there was a risk he might do the same on that last kick, when the odds said fair catch it. Imo a good coach notices that and makes sure the guy either a) knows what to do in that situation (i.e. get the ball back in the offenses hand, don't try to win it on the return), or b) put ODB back there if you're really looking for sure hands and a chance at a return. He did neither.

He will pull off a block here and here but it is never going to be a big part of his game. His biggest issue is drops.

It’s too premature to give up on Shurmur.

Serious doubts - seriously?
You want to blame the coach for drops, a muffed punt, and a failed run play in our first game?
Tough crowd.
Who is this guy Clay and why was he on the field there? I have a problem with the decision to even have him on the field. I'm with you this is crazy

Some game calls trouble me: - running Barkley up the middle on the 2 point conversion after hed just run 68 yards, and we'd had no success up the middle - not having clay fair catch on the fumbled punt after he'd been shown as too aggressive not calling fair catches earlier - more generally, the team looked like it was playing first game of preseason, especially on offense. Yeah Beckham and Barkley didn't play much preseason, but how to explain drops from engram and shepherd? Don’t you think you are over reacting just a little bit? Christ this is only the He first game give him some time!

That 2-pt conversion was supposed to be a pass but Eli called an audible to run according to this article which I saw posted in another thread nypost.com/2018/09/10/that-weird-giants-play-call-wasnt-pat-shurmurs-fault/

It's the fault of the coach that there were drops from engram and shepherd and that his QB opted to audible to a run on a play?
I think he called a good game- the players didn't execute the plays....far different than McAdoo's archaic, unimaginative, simple offense.

Me too. I didn't have the chance to watch the game until after I read the aftermath here. When the muff happened I was wondering why everyone was calling Hunter a "nobody signed off the street." Then it hit me.

Actually on the Campbell play , i thought it was hilarious to run behind engram. Engram gets a definite pass on that one. I guess I have extreme expectations from this kid. You have to have heart all the time in this game. Barkley and Beckham were putting some serious whacks on people. Engram is big and strong , he has to put some hurt on out there especially when blocking for barkley. When he ran out of bounds on that crucial play he should have threw a mean stiff arm at that guy. Fight for every yard out there.

Some good points, but what was most baffling to me was that Ereck Flowers was caught off guard that Calais Campbell was more of a power guy than a speed guy and it caught him off guard. How is this possible with scouting reports and practices all week? You'd think you'd want to coach up and prepare the weakest link on your line.
Shurmur is going to be just fine. We lost a close game against a tough team without our best defensive player on the field.

I'm staying optimistic and hoping that we riught this ship for Sunday against Dallas Cowboys and we beat them up.

If the play doesnt always go as expected it should be attributed to the coach but at this stage of the season I wouldnt be worried to the point of concern. Overall Shumur called a "pretty good" game imo.

He said they were going for the punt block, I agree they shouldve fair caught it and it shouldve been OBJ catching it. 3. Those drops have exactly what to do with the coach? He put them in the right position to make plays and they didn't.... I thought it was very refreshing seeing his play calling compared to the previous idiot.

The loss really has nothing to do with Shurmur in my opinion even more so, the fact thta both sheppard and engram have had issues with drops has nothing to do with shumur, the miffed punt shit happens, the guy is back there to field punts and make some plays not to be told to fair catch a football, the guy is new and a professional expected to make smart decisions he did not - and i'm sure he's heard about it
One game in people already question the abilities of the new coach lol..

Moral of this story is that we need to burn the #15 jersey once and for all.

Belichick released McCarron(?) first thing Monday morning. The dude who muffed a punt in the first half of their game.
Shurmur should learn something from the GOAT and release this dude ASAP.

SS drop was during the final drive right? Man that was tough. He makes a nice low diving catch but drops one in his chest.

Shurmur was a bad HC in Cleveland. It was Cleveland though so you do get a slight pass. He hasn't been impressing me much at all here though. I really do think he needs DJ to run his offense. Stop rolling Eli out of pocket!

To me...play calling has nothing to do with it. Is he a real leader of men and genuine head coach material?.....At this point...I say the answer is no.
He's a good OC who shouldn't be a head coach in the NFL.

I've tried defending the play call that lead to safety, but to no avail. Hand off to 3rd string back, on slow developing run play, when their dline was handling ours up the middle....no excuse
