Couple facts:
He’s NEVER going to get a contract that represents his draft position. Not even worth discussing.
He’s an injury risk, so huge guaranteed money for him is a huge risk.
But watching breakdown/commentary of his big plays shows that his skill set isn’t “common”. I’m in the Toronto area so I see a lot of Buffalo games. Singletary is a great back but you can’t really compare him to Barkley.
Heres my thought, to me it’s conceivable that Jones doesn’t work out but Barkley could put up 2,000 combined yards and we could still end up a near .500 team with our schedule, which conceivably puts us picking in the mid teens in the 1st round (15-19). You could have 3-4 QB desperate teams in the top 5.
If our FO doesn’t love any of the fringe QBs, how far do you go to re-sign Barkley? Are you willing to risk falling from 7-9 wins back down to 5-7 because you’re not willing to trade three 1st rd picks (probably more) to move up and snag the QB that you want.
It’s the modern NFL. If you fall in love with a QB you’re sure is a franchise QB I think you sell the house and live on the street to get him. It’s clear an amazing QB and an average OL is all you really need.
But if Barkley puts this team on his back instead of Jones, it creates and interesting dynamic in the off-season.

I love Barkley and hope he has an amazing season. However, I can't see him being on the Giants next year; there's still too many holes to fill, namely QB like you said.
I'd say he winds up being part of a trade package to move up in next years draft to get a QB.

Would love to keep Barkley but there is no future in having a RB lead your team. If Jones doesn't work out, why keep an often injured player who will command top 5 money in his position?
Now, if Barkley didn't have the injury history, my thought process would be different.

Giving Barkley a big contract is something Gettleman would do.

I love Barkley and think he's a huge asset to the team. I just hope there's a way we can retain him. We'll see how the year plays out as to Jones. I hope he can prove he's the guy and we can keep both somehow

But if every team is concerned about his injury history, I think it gets interesting. Again, it’s not if you go and get your QB and have to trade a boatload of draft picks to get him. That means you need to play in FA more than you probably want to because you don’t have as much draft capital. Regardless of guaranteed money, you can’t put a lot of available cap space into RB if you don’t have a 1st rd pick for 3 years. The scenario that gets interesting is if you don’t want to invest three 1sts in a QB, and the market for SB isn’t strong.

Even if he is not banged up his usage indicates that he will not last long. Best to trade him while he has value *gasp!, goes the SQB fanboys and relatives*

I'm in the camp that a team shouldn't give big contracts to RBs, WRs and TEs.. For starters..

He’ll realistically be a free agent in 6 months without giving up a draft pick. Could we catch a perfect storm? A team that desperately needs a RB and doesn’t care about getting fleeced for him? I’ll do that deal in a heartbeat. But if you couldn’t trade a a talented CB like Bradberry I can’t imagine there’s a market for SB. Which is kinda my point. I think you can resign him without giving up a unmanageable number. Again, it only makes sense if you think the QB you want is out of reach.

I'm in the camp that a team shouldn't give big contracts to RBs, WRs and TEs.. For starters.. TE would be the only position I’d disagree with, even the “big” contracts are relatively cheap. Big proponent of buying talent at the “cheap” positions and drafting the expensive positions. Some caveats to that, but generally speaking..

There’s a stupid amount of money available and contract demands are adjusting because of it. Lamar Jackson turned down $250 because the market is franchise QBs demanding all guaranteed money. You might be right. There’s usually an idiot somewhere. But if this team beats expectations and theres an absolute glut of QB needy teams bunched in the top 7, I think a wide range of weird options are on the table.

Not SBs fault he was drafted at #2. I hope he has a great season, stays healthy and helps this team win games. With that said I dont see the NYGs giving him big money unless he has some other wordly type season. Hopefully if he is part od trade/draft spot package its not for a QB because I want Jones to work out. I dont want this team top have to start over with some rookie QB which may or may not work out.

I don't think there is a chance in hell he takes in $13M so that means top 2 at the minimum. No chance the Giants bring him back.

I think the market for RBs falls apart. QBs have always been a premium but Mahomes and Burrows broke the mold. They’re overcoming crappy o lines and are still incredibly successful. It’s the Browns but I don’t think what they gave up for Watson was out of market. And he has warts. Real warts. decent QBs want all guaranteed money now. The top of the RB world is riddled with injuries. I think the market for RBs collapses because of their short shelf life and how much of your cap you need for a QB.

It just takes one team for me to be wrong, but I think this position continues to fall in compensation, even compared to 2-3 years ago. Too many injuries and too many QBs that seem to fix multiple issues.

Everyone wants the Ferrari. Until you see the price tag, then you realize you may have to live in it to afford it. Same thing goes for the running back position. It’s great when you have an elite player, however the cost to keep one is way out of our price range. You first have to deal with injuries, and Barkley has had his fair share of them. All of them mind you, to his legs. Second, the longevity of the position, the shelf life of a running back is done in dog years. The Emmitt Smiths, and Adrian Petersons are a rarity. Backs normally hit a wall in there late 20s, their speed and athleticism is always a first to go.
It’s also the one position where you can find talent anywhere.. Hell, you can go to the dollar tree and get Austin Ekeler for nothing. Always invest heavily into the offensive line. For they can make a fan out of the stands, look respectable. Let some other team be the sucker and way over pay for him. Let’s not be the Dallas Cowboys or Carolina Panthers. Two teams that backed the brinks truck for an endangered position.

What numbers performance wise would justify the Giants keeping him? It’s not his performance as much as staying healthy and the market for RBs potentially falling apart. . That list Miggs posted is filled mostly with injured RBs and older RBs. Some dummy GM can blow my theory to pieces by trying to save his ass like Gettty did with KG. But weird things happen. Maybe SB builds a relationship with this coaching staff that he values more than going to some desperate team and hearing about how much he sucks in the press. That really got to him this year.

What numbers performance wise would justify the Giants keeping him? It's not just Barkley's performance that will determine if the Giants offer a contract, it's the state of the team. As I mentioned, do you pay a RB top 1 or 2 money if Jones doesn't work out?

If no other team will either, it gets interesting. I think we’re witnessing the demise of the position. I think the top 5 RB contracts prove it. They won’t get those numbers in todays market. My two cents.

I think with all the talented WRs coming out of the draft these past years it will soon cause them to have to settle for less money in FA market in the future..

If Barkley has a good year stats wise there will be suitors. Barkley is getting a lot of buzz even this early in the season Since I am a Giants fan (and a pretend GM) I look at this as what would I get for him. I am looking at draft picks, there will be teams that give them, especially if they think they are just one piece of the puzzle away from layoff glory. If we can do a sign and trade that would be better. However the resign has to be team friendly not SQB friendly. If Barkley demands stupid money them I would just let him go.. The QB is a separate issue
