And for those keeping score at home that's 16 players left from the opening day roster from 2017 16 to many!

For all intents and purposes, Ereck Flowers and the Giants unofficially parted ways two weeks into this season, when he was benched, yanked from his starting right tackle job. All that remained for Flowers was to practice with the team and stand on the sideline on game days, unless an injury to one of the two offensive tackles meant his services were needed. Now, even that modest role is being taken away from Flowers. The Giants will release him on Tuesday, unless they can find a team to trade for him, The Post confirmed. ESPN was first to report the impending move with Flowers. The new regime of GM Dave Gettleman and coaach Pat Shurmur tried to make it work with Flowers, the 2015 first round draft pick who was a constant and nagging disappointment in his three-plus years with the team. Gettleman and Shurmur arrived and talked of giving players a “clean slate’’ and wanted that to include Flowers, the starting left tackle since his rookie season. Nate Solder was signed in free agency and a move was made to put Flowers on the right side, where many NFL scouts believed he belonged as soon as he entered the league. The clean slate lasted all of two games before Shurmur learned what Tom Coughlin and Ben McAdoo already knew: Flowers on your offensive line is a detriment. Shurmur put second-year Chad Wheeler in at right tackle and stuck Flowers on the bench. After games, as soon as the locker room opened up, Flowers was usually the first player to exit. Why now? It is more than obvious Flowers has no future with the organization and the relationship was wilting badly. It became apparent to Gettleman and Shurmur there was no need to prolong the inevitable. He was not valued on the field and his attitude in the locker room was suspect. A lose-lose situation, in other words. It is doubtful the Giants can coerce anyone to take a stab at Flowers. He is on the final year of a contract that guarantees him $2.39 million this season. Any team trading for him would have to inherit that salary. If he is released, a team can sign him to a lesser deal. Flowers, 26, is big and strong and looks like a prototype NFL tackle. He is not, mainly because of severe deficiencies in his technique. His hand placement is poor, and one NFL coach who worked with him told The Post the biggest problem with Flowers is he simply cannot bend his body the way an offensive tackle needs to bend in order to combat pass rushers. The only attribute that makes Flowers attractive is he is durable. He started 48 games in his career and at times played through ankle issues. nypost.com/2018/10/08/the-giants-are-done-with-ereck-flowers/

I'm not arguing that one because Morris overcame the first round mistake. Think about where the Giants could have been if they took Ray Lewis instead of Jones. That Jones pick was a bad setback for us,number 5 overall in a draft class that was very strong in the front end. For years the Giants made better second round picks than first round picks (with a few obvious exceptions). Their all time leading rusher, receiver and sack leader were all picked in the second round. HaHa roswell, Great Point ! I guess Hernandez needs to start to step up. Cause our greatest OL was picked in some ridicules rd. like the 20 something back in the 50's.

By releasing him we get no help on the cap the salary is paid in full I believe. So I guess were getting a backup OT from somewhere. Is it addition by subtraction ? Recognizing the problem is the first step in fixing the problem. In that context TGR, I would consider it addition by subtraction. Now remember, releasing Flowers should not be confused with replacing/upgrading that roster spot.

We all could come up the what could have been after the fact. I said last we took Phil instead of Montana. How may rings could have Montana won with the Defense The Giants had? We used to discuss this back when both guys were still playing. Our consensus was that Montana may not have lived through the first 4 years or so. Phil is one tough SOB and he barely made it through in one piece. Also, he would not have been playing for the perfect coach for him in Bill Walsh were he here. Montana didn't have a big arm Phil had a gun he fit the coach and the weather.

Well who is going to trade for him if they know we will release him. I guess it ensures they get him and don't have to compete for his services. I still wish we would have tried him at OG.

How many rings would Simms have won if he had Jerry Rice? I have always wondered how awesome it would have been if we took Strahan in 93, Derrick Brooks in 95 and Ray Lewis in 96.

By releasing him we get no help on the cap the salary is paid in full I believe. His salary is paid but my question is does it count against the cap? I know it is the top 53 that count against the cap. I'm not sure really. I don't care if the Giants have to pay him money, I just want some cap room to get another body in there.

Finally. It was a mistake to keep him past camp. At least they admitted the mistake and have moved forward.

The fact that they never tried him at another spot on the o line speaks volumes. He is either too stubborn (aka a bad team mate) or the coaches just knew he would suck anyway. Probably both What? He went from Left tackle to right tackle this year and still played poorly.

I find the Ereck Flowers situation odd. Of course he was an underachiever relative to his draft position but to get rid of a guy after two weeks at a new position tells me there is much more going on than just poor play. He wasn't even the worst lineman week 2. He must be really disliked in the locker room by the people who count.

With our luck he'll get picked by a SB contender to be a bench warmer or to block on the FG unit, & ends up with a SB ring this yr.

Glad they're sticking with Wheeler I'm already seeing improvements from him the last 2 Weeks vs Cam Jordan and Julius Peppers. I think by seasons end Wheeler could solidify that position and I hope he does. However, we need a nasty Right Guard or they need to flip Hernandez and Omameh

The timing is extremely odd. There has to be something else going on in the locker room, IMO.

I supported him for too long based on a few reasons. 1. He seemed to have more passion to succeed than the rest of that terrible OL in his rookie season. 2. For his entire time here there was no obvious and meaningful upgrade on the roster 3. Cap implications It is overdue and I was slow on the uptake. You are forgiven...LOL!!

I wanted this guy gone last year when Gettleman first took over. Is the cap hit better now than it was before? I know a lot of people were saying he was too much of a cap hit to release at the time. I'm thinking his attitude is making it impossible to be on the roster to the point they will deal with any cap issues this causes. The fact the line as a whole seems more cohesive as a unit since he was benched is telling Might be one of those big strong dumb guys? I would maybe like to see his Wonderlic score.....lol

about 3 years late one of the worst O linemen I've ever seen in my life I agree with this. He also has horrible work ethic did not try to improve at his trade. Arguably the biggest bust in franchise history. Him and Derek Brown are neck and neck in that race. Cedric “ the one eye Jedi” Jones and Ron “Lame” Dayne are two bad ones for where they were drafted.

The Jones one to me was the worst because that was the exact time we knew the game passed Young by These players were still on the board IIR Walter Jones Ray Lewis Terry Glenn But because Young was so stubborn to stick to 1970s value on players he could never think outside the box in the 1st round I remember we needed a WR back then and when they said during the draft that Jone was legally blind in one eye I immediately thought great once we play the douche bag Eagles there going to try to poke him in his good eye. He never turned out to be anything but I remember when I went to the 2000 NFC Championship game he had a big sack that’s the only play I ever really remember him making.....lol

If any yous are wondering when or who was gonna make a Todd Gurley reference. Well.........may not be in this mess with him already on the roster. Barkely doesn’t get selected and who knows? I’m not happy about Flowers leaving, I’m depressed! All this FO seems to do is waste draft capital, it’s sad!

Would not be surprised if Soldier and possibly Eli went to Shurmer behind the scenes and told him that Flowers is a huge problem

And I'm still not taking Gurley even playing revisionist history because we had just had back to back seasons breaking records for amount of games missed due to injury and amount of players on IR per year and taking someone who blew out his knee the season before. Our luck he reinjures it in his rookie season and is done. I dont know who else we could have taken as the guy I wanted was off everyone's board (La'el Collins, who Dallas tampered with the process when his agent said dont tKe his player after the 3rd round and was on his way to Dallas even before the draft ended). Was kinda a shitty yesr

Unfortunate it did not work out. I think they believed that his poor technique could eventually be coached up when he was drafted. I am truly amazed at how he was never able to improve his game. Good decision to get rid of him.
