Watching Penix last night wasn’t great for my confidence. He missed some wide open throws, which doesn’t seem to be out of character based on my first impression. Odunze would’ve had himself a huge day if Penix didn’t miss on some key throws.
At this point I don’t see us drafting a a QB in Rd1 unless we trade out of #6. The likelihood of Williams, Daniels, or Maye falling are slim, and #6 seems like a reach for Penix and Nix.

Bears might trade out if they like Fields going forward. Maybe it's the Pats jumping Washington. Atlanta also could jump us to 5 and pick a QB so there is that too. I could see Daniels being their target.

I don't think that either Penix or McCarthy helped themselves last night.

It all depends on how they evaluate the QBs

If Chicago is sticking with Fields, they are trading the #1 pick again. with Fields only on the books for one year, that may not necessarily be the case. It gives Chicago the flexibility to not start a rookie right out of the gates, like KC did with Mahommes.

I would hope not. It would cost us quite a bit in draft pick compensation and really effect our future. Imagine we pull a Carolina Panthers and give up multiple 1st and 2nd rounders, and WanDale Robinson, and draft Caleb Williams who turns out to be not anywhere near the QB drafted after him. Pass.

In the draft, do what we can to trade back. It's never easy, but our roster can use the additional picks and we could draft a QB like Nix later in the 1st. Have Nix sit behind the veteran FA while he learns the playbook and gets up to speed. Even if he were to bust, we can move on in two years and use the draft capital we saved by not trading up to keep building.
This scenario would also allow us to sit Jones in 2024 removing any risk of paying him an additional $30M in 2025. Seems like a decent long term option for us if we can somehow pull it off.

I'm with you on not trading up, will be way to costly. for a QB or Marvin Harrison Jr?? either, certainly not at WR. With Robinson's play late in the season, that may not be as high a priority as it seemed for a lot of it. Should Daniels slip past 3, trading up to 4 might not be so prohibitive. I'm really talking about trading into the top pick or 2 to get a specific player. I would not want to give up a deal like Carolina did last year, we have too many holes to fill for that, imo.

I would give up the pick we got for Leo to move up to that spot. Maybe even more!!! If Jones problem is staring down one wr this weaknesses can be mitigated by having one really good one. I would still try to trade up at the end of the first round for the best QB remaining just in case.

Not sure if our first and that second rounder would do it to move up though. If AZ wants to move down, they will probably be able to secure a better load then that (imo of course) No arguments about Harrison's potential to be really good though...

I think that pick is enough to move up two spots it's not like they are moving from 6 to 2 or from 4 to 15. It's just two spots. We would would be able to get that tackle from Notre Dame or nabers if no trade happens. I guess it depends on how much each team loves Harrison

First Impression: Potential Top-15 Prospect JJ McCarthy: Now that McCarthy has officially declared for the draft I decided to give a few of his games/film reviews a watch. So far, I've watched the OSU game from 2022, the Ole Miss game from 2023, and various clips I found online. Of the six prospects I've watched so far, I'd say McCarthy and Williams have the best overall pocket presence. McCarthy looks completely natural manipulating the pocket, at keeping his eyes downfield when he breaks the pocket, and he has the arm talent to make every throw. He's one of the few QBs I saw take a snap from under center, but like those other QBs those plays ended up being runs. He consistently attacked down the field and he has enough athleticism to make plays with his legs. Beyond his tangible traits, I like the fact McCarthy has played in more of a traditional offense under Harbaugh for two years, and I like the fact he's played outdoors at Michigan in inclement weather. All-in-all, I'm surprised at how much I liked McCarthy's tape. He looks to have all the tools, his recall and ability to retain information is said to be top notch, and at 19 he's just starting to scratch the surface of his potential.
In terms of negatives, I really didn't see much. My biggest concern with McCarthy is the fact he wasn't asked to do much in a lot of games. Michigan leaned heavily on the running game, and his stats aren't bloated like other QBs playing in spread offenses, so an argument can be made that McCarthy has shown to be nothing more than a game managing QB. His weight may also be a concern as he's only listed at 200lbs, but I imagine he'll naturally add 10-15lbs over the next few years as his body matures. There were also some inconsistencies I noticed with his short/intermediate throws, but nothing overly concerning.
Pros: - Very comfortable in the pocket, looks like a QB
- Able to manipulate pocket - Keeps eyes down field when breaking pocket - Solid athlete, can create chunk plays with legs - Strong arm, can throw 40+ yards on a rope - Willing to attack downfield - Doesn't seem dependent on the sideline pre-snap - Coached by Harbaugh, ran a "traditional" offense - Accustomed to inclement weather playing at Michigan
- Only 19 years old, tons of upside
Cons: - Leaned heavily on run game, wasn't asked to do much - Slight frame, listed at only 200lbs - A bit inconsistent

At this point, I've watched at least a couple of games of the consensus top-6 QB prospects. I'll watch more film and will eventually watch QBs outside the projected top-6 as the off-season progresses, but here's my pecking order based on what I've seen so far. Tier 1: 1. Caleb Williams: I think Williams is in a tier of his own, and I honestly don't think it's close. He's one of three QBs coming out this year that offers an elite trait that can't be taught. In Williams' case, that trait is arm talent. His arm talent isn't something you see every year. He can make every single throw from the pocket, on the move, from different arm angles, and at different speeds and trajectories. Beyond not having the prototypical height, I think Williams has every tool you can ask for in a QB. In 2023, he had little to work with and was running for his life on every other play, but he consistently manipulated the pocket and kept his eyes down field. Even though he has the speed to shred defenses with his legs, Williams doesn't look to run first despite his porous OL. In my opinion, Williams has a real chance to become an "elite" QB at the NFL level beyond his rookie contract.
Tier 2: 2. Jayden Daniels: The first time I watched Daniels I was in awe. He's without a doubt the most exciting QB to watch, and he's the second QB that offers an elite trait that can't be taught. Jayden's trait is speed. When Jayden breaks the pocket he looks like the second coming of Lamar Jackson. Similar to Lamar, he has a cannon of an arm and is a legit dual threat QB. He's going to give NFL DCs fits day-1, and his ability to hit a home run from anywhere on the field is why I currently have him as my QB2. However, and also similar to Lamar, I'm very concerned with his frame and whether or not he can withstand taking hits at the NFL level. I also question his overall arm talent and accuracy, and whether or not he can consistently play within structure from the pocket. Is he too dependent on his legs? Can he consistently make throws in tight windows? Can he improve his touch on short to intermediate throws? Can he consistently stay healthy for 17+ games? As exciting of a prospect as Jayden is, I can see him being a bust depending on the answers to some of those questions.
3. JJ McCarthy: As much as I hate the idea of drafting on potential, I think McCarthy could very well end up being the best QB in this class. Simply put, he looks like a NFL QB. Despite not being asked to throw the ball 40+ times a game, McCarthy seems to have the tools that translate to the NFL.....very comfortable manipulating the pocket, plus arm strength, ability to pick up yards with his legs, works through progressions and isn't overly dependent on the sideline pre-snap, etc. He's so young and has already shown so much composure at Michigan, I can't help but think that his game is going to take considerable strides in the coming years.
4. Bo Nix: I seem to be higher on Bo Nix than most, and actually have him more as my QB3b. Similar to Daniels and Penix, Nix is an older college QB. He seems to get a lot of hate from his time at Auburn, but I think his struggles were over hyped due to his name and pedigree coming out of high school. He was the SEC Freshman of the year before Auburn changed OCs. Based on what I've seen, Nix has the arm talent to make every throw, he has the athleticism to pick up chunk yards with his legs, he has good command at the LOS, etc. He rarely seems to make bad decisions, which is evident by his stats. I like everything I've seen from this kid. My biggest concern would be his age. I was originally concerned with what looked to be his reliance on the sideline pre-snap, but the more I watched I saw multiple examples of Nix calling audibles at the LOS. In my opinion, Nix is currently the most overlooked QB in the draft and has the tools to potentially take a team to the next level.
5. Drake Maye: Unlike Nix, I seem to be lower on Maye than most. Perhaps it's my love for the Wolfpack, but I've never come away from a UNC game wowed by what I saw. The reason I didn't bump him down a tier is due to the fact he's the third QB coming out that offers an elite trait that can't be taught. For Maye, that trait is his frame. Dude is monster. He has the prototypical size you want in a QB, and he has the athleticism to cause havoc for opposing defenses. He has a strong arm and can make throws with defenders draped on him. He's also young, so he should continue to improve. That said, I simply haven't been impressed when watching him. He took a noticeable step backwards in 2023 when UNC lost some of their NFL talent to the draft. I think Maye can be a solid game manager if everything around him is intact but I don't see him carrying a rebuilding team to success.
Tier 3:
6. Michael Penix: I know for a fact I'm lower on Penix than nearly everyone else. Everyone jumped on the bandwagon after the Alabama game, but based on the games I've watched there's nothing about Penix's game that excites me. He's a statue in the pocket, he consistently misses easy throws, he has a horrible injury history, he's almost 24 years old, etc. He occasionally throws a nice deep ball, but he has weapons like Odunze on the outside who make 50/50 balls look routine. When watching Penix, I just felt like everything was slow. I may very well eat my words come next year, but based on what I've seen I want no part of Penix and will likely knock him down a few notches after watching more QBs.

Getting harder and harder to see us taking a QB qith pick number 6.
We have 3 QB needy teams picking 1, 2 and 3 and it is hard to imagine those teams (a) passing up on a QB or (b) trading out of their pick.
That would put us in the position of taking the 4th best QB at pick number 6, which I just can't see Schoen doing.
I think it's more likely that we (1) trade back a few picks and select McCarthy/Nix after acquiring some more draft capital; or (2) draft Rome/Nabors at 6 and then trade back into the first for McCarthy/Nix.

I haven’t watched enough film on either, but between Nabers and Odunze I feel Odunze is better suited for playing in the outside. Doesn’t Nabers typically line up in the slot or am I off there?

I think Nix or McCarthy maybe both will get pushed up top 10 to 15 so many QB needy teams us the Saints the Seahawks just to name a few trying to move down might not be so easy.
