Obviously, year 3 for him a major disappointment due to injury. Even before the injury, the kid was stuffed more than a Thanksgiving Turkey at John Maddens house. What was crazy about this was, he got injured on his best (and only good) run, the first time, his arm/wrist the way he fell down. Shakes it off, and the next run another good one, but pops his ACL (I believe it happened before he was tackled).
The Good-
Obviously a blessed athlete. Great in open space. Has quads for days. A very respectable and likeable personality. Home run hitter when given the opportunity.
The Bad-
Dancer. Stays behind the LOS way too long trying to find anything, making him lose yards on too many runs. Cant not block worth a lick. Not sure if he shies from it or just cant do it, but it isnt good. Drops some easy passes at times. Durability now becoming a question.
The biggest question is now, how does he bounce back from this injury? Will he be reliable going forward? And what should we do about his contract? Let him hit FA or extend? Is the team actually worse without him?
Obviously my thoughts on drafting a RB at 2 are well known, but ignoring the fact he was picked there which isnt his fault, Im still not sure we should resign him long term. This is why I always say dont take a RB early unless you are in that window. I dont like 2nd contracts for RBs, especially ones that more than likely will be very costly. He cant do the other things we need him to do to be a complete back. Plus, obviously our OL is still a disaster in progress.
Running Back Saquon Barkley... Is his long term future (2022+) still with the Giants?

I was really expecting a breakout year from him this season....instead we get one game for 6 yards and another with a torn ACL. Not exactly what I had in mind.

The decision on whether to keep Saquon long term isn't one that's made this offseason. He still has next year and the 5th year option on his contract. I would imagine the team will pick up his 5th year option and then make a decision at the end of next season.

Hate to say it, but I think at this point we can admit it was the wrong pick. Hindsight is 20/20, I get it. There was no way to know this would happen to him. But all things considered, looking at where we are now, is there anyone who would still make that pick?
I know it's sort of an unfair question, but it is what it is. I actually feel really bad for him, being drafted by us was probably the worst thing that could have happened to him.

He flashed so much potential as a rookie. I believe his rookie year was the only year he had a legit outside weapon to compliment him too. So I think the people beating the WR horse have some legit evidence. We need someone outside to open it up for Saquon. The last 2 years without a weapon, he has been boxed up. Maybe the QB situation also has something to do with it. Dont know yet.

Love him as a player and hope nothing but the best, but he was just not the guy for us. You just don't draft a hb with the number 2 overall pick, I dont care who it is you just don't esp when your team isn't even close to being a contender.

I've said since he was drafted it will be very unlikely that signing him past his 5th year option will likely turn out to be a bad idea in the end. Nothing yet has changed my opinion on that.

I still don't think it was a bad selection based on who was available, what we all knew at the time and assuming there were no good trade offers as reported. But there were several directions they could have gone with that pick that all would have been good decisions. From what I have heard from multiple sources, Josh Allen was the pick if Barkley was gone. In hindsight, might have been the better way to go. But I'll be honest, I did not think Allen would be a good QB in the NFL. In the second I wanted Smith over Hernandez, though it was close. I just thought Smith could do more and was more athletic than Hernandez.

Now minus Barkley Half this fam base got exactly what it wished for This is Dan Reeves era Giants football You need good players at all positions; but receivers is the least important group on on offense. If you have a good QB, you can get good production out of fairly mediocre WRs. Provided you have a good OL in front of him that will provide a good running game. That was the big mistake with Barkley. They likely thought they could skip a step with him, he was so good that he would provide a good running game even in absence of a good OL. I know a lot of fans who thought that. Well that failed. I am happy they are finally making what appears to be mostly smart moves on the OL.....finally....but they have put themselves behind the 8 ball there. That group needs to gel quick and even if they do, IDK if Gates is the answer at C. Thomas-Hernandez-A good Center-Hopefully KZ doesn't get old or Shane develops-Peart: hopefully that is the start of something there. Because until that is fixed we are just spinning our wheels everywhere else. When the Giants addressed both tackle positions in this draft with players with legitimate talent to start.....I jumped for joy in this draft. Only thing that would have made me happier is if they got a C in round 2 1-Thomas-T 2-Hennessy-C 3-Peart-T 4-Holmes 5-Lemieux-G 6-Runyan-G/T 7-Coughlin 7-Brunson 7-Williamson 7-Crowder Would have been a very nice draft.

And the last thing a young developing O line needs that is still trying to gell is so many people near the LOS that can blitz the backs every play, which further complicates the line.. So yes WRs and really gooe ones teams fear are just as important cog in really good offenses as everything else

T I don't think the price tag on the 5th year option scares them off. It's usually long term contracts that worry teams with running backs. They'll pick up his option so that they have it as a chip to use if they do look to trade him. No way you trade him this upcoming offseason, his value will never be lower after coming off two injury riddled seasons.

i think we take a promising RB in the 3rd or 4th rd next year since god knows saquon won't play a down in preseason next year (if there even is one if covid is still going on) and hope for the best. give him a good look in preseason . spell him with saquon in games next year and if it looks like he's even halfway good as saquon is and can block and is durable. we move on from saquon. you never draft a RB at #2 unless you have a team that's ready to win. now we're wasting daniel jones rookie contract (if he's any good anyway) with a horrible team that can't win more than 4 or 5 games in a season. how gettleman didn't get fired last season i have no idea.

I can't think about any RB on our roster, in FA, available in a trade or in next years draft as long as this OL is performing the way it is. I want a plug and play RB with a robust OL in front of him. Is that too much to ask?
