So as of now, outside of all the other needs this team has, we have to hope Thomas steps up at LT, figure out whats up with Hernandez at RG or if its Lemieux there, Gates at C works, a question at RG and a question at RT. Sounds promising for a young QB to get over the hump. this will not end well im afraid. And i was optimistic about this season. Smh. I guess lets see who we draft. Not when you need to do everything to protect the QB before he can throw it to his weapons...and as you of all posters should know, this is the make or break year for Jones. If those fumbles return, the ball security...the failure to feel the pocket...that's all on the OL and eventually, Jones. IMHO, this came down to paying for Leonard Williams ...and if Dave does not kick the can THIS year at the very least, he might be opening the door for his own departure ...we now need a lot.

They are at the start of the league year. True. I was arguing the same a few months ago but was wrong. But I still think there is zero chance of EE being cut. I agree.

We can't cut him .5th year options are fully guaranteed Nah, not until the league year starts. What you are saying is true for the 2018 draft class and later due to change of language in the CBA, but Engram can absolutely be cut without penalty to our cap (until sometime in the upcoming months). That said, its a moot point, seems like he's not going anywhere. This is from 2017 linkBelow are the terms of the 5th-year option prior to the changes made during the 2020 CBA negotiations: When a team exercises the option, it becomes guaranteed for injury only. If the player is on the team’s roster at the start of the League Year in his option season, his salary becomes fully guaranteed for skill, cap and injury. The league year starts next Wednesday March 17th. The new CBA rule linkPlayers selected in the 2016 and 2017 NFL Drafts will have different fifth-year options thresholds than those selected in 2018 and beyond..The fifth-year option for such players is fully guaranteed at the time it is exercised\
He is fully guaranteed next Wednesday.

He is fully guaranteed next Wednesday. Right, so we can cut him prior to next Wednesday with no cap hit.

Really disappointed they decided to over spend on a DT and the cause of it is losing their best olineman..

Zeitler getting released hurts us...essentially we are making the right financial decision with the wrong player.
Not a lot of choice here, but it hurts us.

Gettleman did the right thing getting rid of the older player. More cuts need and will be made. This is a scenario that is occurring all over the league. KC just cut both starting offensive tackles.........and they are still well over the cap. Quit whining and Gettleman is doing the right thing given the bad circumstances.

-1 Giants Best lineman cut +1 Dallas brings back their QB who was injured +2 You forgot to mention the best part, the Cowboys paid Prescott $40M per year. Prescott's contract is a 4 year contract and in year 5 (2025), the cowboys will have a cap hit of $13.2M. So the Cowboys will be on the books for $13.2M in 2025 without Prescott signed....

Really disappointed they decided to over spend on a DT and the cause of it is losing their best olineman.. You forgot to mention Tomlinson. We're going to lose him in the process. It should be easy to find a nose tackle who doesn't miss games, it's not like they don't grow on trees? Also, the Giants aren't done yet. Now they have to figure out what they are doing with Solder. Releasing him will be a big cap hit, and restructuring would only back load his money. Either way we're screwed..

So true this team is screwed which leaves up looking at another high draft pick in 2022! Will those threads start in Oct. again this year?

Is a oxymoron if I ever saw one..

Gettleman did the right thing, and more veterans will be cut from the Giants in the coming days.....you better hold back some of your whining for that as well. Buck up Ladies, this is the NFL after a pandemic and many here seem oblivious to that fact. Solder will be the next bet to go.

Adam Schefter @adamschefter
Former Giants’ G Kevin Zeitler reached agreement on a three-year, $22.5 million including $16 million guaranteed with the Baltimore Ravens, per league source

Wonder if the FO would have been open to a restructure that lowered him to $7M per.

Me I would not have wanted to for his age.

We all knew he was too much at his current rate and adding a few years to get to this size of a contract was the move to make. Once again another GM is showing how to get it done while Getty isn't..

FYI - The Ravens have an out after 2 years.
And for whatever it's worth Zeitler had very good things to say about Joe Judge and Jones. Said he learned a lot from Joe and that he's establishing a great culture. He also said he sees the Giants as being a dangerous team this season and expects big things from DJ now that he's gone through the craziness of his rookie year and the craziness of learning a new system during covid.

Don’t put too much stock into what he said. Zeitler said the same thing about the Bengals too. “I respect the whole Brown family with how they run their organization. They have their blueprint and they stick to that and it’s worked out well for them. There’s no hard feelings or anything like that. It’s what they do and I’m sure they’ll be alright.” It’s not as glowing as what he said about the Giants. But, you get my point.

Here's to hoping all that comes true but they need better players or some of the quickest developers in the history of the sport..

I cant wait to hear all the crying how our OL is the issue again next year if/when DJ and SQB are struggling to find space... Zeitler was our best OLineman. Really tough to swallow this and think we are headed in the right direction... Ill say it again, DG should have been fired a long time ago. He just keeps burying this team. Well, you don't need to be Einstein to predict things like this. Get rid of your best OLman on a shaky OL to begin with....

I completely get it and I have no problem with it. But let's be clear, we were in the position where we had to release our best O lineman. From a pure football point of view, this hurts our O line quite a bit. It doesn't make us better. We had to cut Zeitler, in order to keep Leo. So this is a clearly negative impact on our rebuilding football team. It's like an elevator, you must hit the basement before you start to go to the top floor! The ride should be interesting!

When you are forced to cut your best O lineman, there is a functional problem with the football team. I know it had to be done but it's the fact THAT it had to be done that troubles me.
There's no room for a 32-year-old player on a tear down rebuild! He will help some team that needs a few pieces!
