If he can’t pass block they will not resign him. I don’t think they will.....just apply the franchise tag one or two times then let him go. If he doesn’t pass block any better than he did before let him go after the 2021 season. Right now Barkley is a player who looks like Tarzan but plays like Jane. I agree 100% about the pass blocking and it's huge! I can't imagine B. Parcells and B. Belichick having a RB who can't block. Fans are gonna talk about SB speed, power etc... but the Giants Oline is the weak link added with D Jones turnovers and then you put in a RB who can't pick up the blitz??? WTF !!! No way, put the money in the oline get 3 RB's by committee and now you don't put all your eggs in one basket on the field and with the budget. That is the truth and baffling to me. He seems committed to improving all aspects of his game but that one stands out as a hole in his game. He could have been confused about assignments with so many gaping holes in our OL with multiple defenders pouring through. Or I could be making excuses for him. Let's see where that goes this year.

Didn't realize that, thanks. A bit surprising given his injury, but I guess there's a timing reason. Yeah, my nephew the Jets fan was telling me that new rule when we were discussing Darnold...signing a first rounder after year 3.

Prove it first... Then, no. My take is that if there is anyone on this team that has to "prove it" it is Barkley. I have a far better feeling about DJ coming thru for us this year. Barkley, at a bare minimum, he has to show us that he is at least as good, in all aspects, as the guy who replaced him last year when he went down. He must be a 3 down back. Schemes will help his reluctance to mix it up in north/south plays and a better line will help disguise his 2nd rate blocking.
I really hope he proves me wrong but I think he is our biggest question mark. Hey Leatherneck, You don't think he is as good as Gallman was last year ? Or any other back we've had or have since Tiki ? The main thing we need from Barkley is to be healthy and stay healthy. His rookie year he showed us all what he's capable of doing. Perhaps were saying the same thing. If he stays healthy then he will show us how good he is and be great again. The last 2 years his absence due to injury has been deafening. Now this year their are other serious threats in our offense but Barkley could be the straw that stirs the drink.

Build the OL, and stop listening to the fantasy playing fans...running backs are media creations for sports center. Play calling and the OL creates these overpaid players in a position of little value RB's are gonna get hurt so knowing their NFL lifespan is short why would you sink big money in on one player? How does Dallas / E. Elliott look? Seems he is not the player he was right? (2nd highest paid RB $15 mil) I hope J Mara and Co. are not going down this rabbit hole with SB.

Where does Barkley have to be with his play (stats or other) before you are ready to write his check of more than $ 16 mil per year? Total Yds ? Improved blocking? Catches ? Moving the chains consistently? Who here on this board has their criteria for signing Barkley to a monster contract because that's what he will be looking for. More than 16 + mil per year is a lot of money that can be spent elsewhere but I digress. What is your criteria and thoughts on this. Bro, we dont even have to pick up his 5th year yet. Calm down. They did pick up the 5th yr option.

The average career length for an NFL RB is around 2.5 years which is the lowest of all NFL players (3.3 years overall).

So you are basing your entire rant on speculation in your own head? Point 1). Barkley or his agent have not said anything remotely negligible to build this hypothesis upon. Point 2) Mara as already said there is no plan to extend him at this point. Point 3) He is on the 4th year of his contract, and the FO tied him up next year with his 5th year option. So if it even happens. It is 2 years away. Still I fail to get where you are getting this number from to base an entire rant upon.

Gettlemans ears just perked up when he saw this thread. If Dave is still our GM, I could very well see this happening. Even if it defies all logic of giving a big contract to a running back. But, that went to hell once he drafted him 2nd overall.
Ask yourselves this. Would you want to sign a player who has an injury history, can’t block your grandmother, and plays a position that is easily replaceable? Let him finish his rookie contract with us, then let some other team pick up the fantasy dynamo..

After a certain amount of time, many of the players on that list were getting middling or lower end contracts and signing year to year. The truth is, the majority of running backs production falls off before they hit 30 and it isn't worth paying them big money. DG hasn't been a good GM but the one thing he does well is cut dead wood. 5th year option and franchise or just 5th year option and let him walk. Hell, there was even a story going around in the media that the Giants were debating whether to even take Barkley's 5th year option. That story means that the Giants are sure about Barkley's future with the Giants. I pointed out the highest paid RB salaries to show where this could be headed. Rant? no not really just more of a concern for a RB that can't block.

You posted a list of the players with the most all time rushing yards. It appeared that you were arguing for making Barkley that highest paid RB. I mentioned that the majority of running backs production falls off before 30 and it doesn't make sense to pay him that much. Also, Barkley has an unfavorable injury history and recovering from a massive injury. Like you said, he is under contract for 2021 & 2022 BUT if he has a great year, he will want to be paid BEFORE 2022 (If he was smart and I think he is). If that's the case, they should try to trade him for a second round pick. To much risk with Barkley no matter what he does in 2021.

I’m speaking more when his contract is up. Three seasons in, two of them riddled with injures. This should be the easiest decision amongst the fan base. Thanks for the big head commercials, and jumping out of a pool demonstration. Enjoy your second part of your career for another franchise.

We already made the mistake drafting him 2nd overall. Let’s, not compound a mistake with another one. Judge is smart. That article already indicated that DG wasn't even sure about taking Barkley's 5th year option. Also, Freeman (Backup Qb making nothing) and Morris got paid Dog Crap ($1M) compared to what Barkley could command. Apples and Oranges and I don't think there is anything to worry about.

Earth to TEM, fans will go to games if Tweedledum and Tweedledee were playing. Barkley missed most of last season. A show of hands, did anyone tune the games out due to Barkley being out? It’s been proven time and time again. Do not sign a running back to a big contract. If you want to go against the grain, so be it. You’ll be like the Cowboys who are scrambling to get under the cap.

If the Giants win a SB with Barkley and he is an All Pro in the next two years he is not going anywhere, even if it is at the detriment of the roster. However, the more interesting hypothetical situation is if he is a little better than average, the Giants win a little more, even a playoff game, but he is only in the top 10 RBs of the league. He is still going to demand top RB money and going forward with his injury history, I am not sure it is a great idea to keep him around.
