Isn't it amazing how everyone person/generation has this same thought. "Back in my day...". I bet people watched the 1980s football teams and thought, what a joke with these plastic helmets and face masks "back in my day we had leather helmets and no face masks and I once bit a mans nose off. That was football". I'm sure you went through it with the "old Corps" guys. What ever era of the USMC you served in the group before you was tougher and the group after you was weaker. At that rate it's amazing these Marines today can open a bag of chips. In my case the Viet Nam era the Marines before me were the toughest in the Marine Corp history the WW2 guys. They built the legend the rest of us try and live up to. Those Marines deserve all the respect they get plus a shitload more. Don't mean to leave out the Korean war guys. There were quite a few of them were in both wars. Hoorah !

I am one of the guys that do my best to pay the generations before respect and conduct myself in a manner that would make them proud. During the flags in ceremony 2 years ago I came across a grave of a man that served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. That's crazyness.

My god, that was almost 40 years ago... In 1986, people were complaining that NFL players are not tough because they weren't wearing leather helmets like they used to in the 40s. Or maybe they weren't, I have no idea, I'm just saying how ridiculous it is to act as if a sport, and even people, shouldn't change in 40 years.

If I ran a 4.89 at CB coming out of college in 1980 what is there to brag about?? Let me just blend in. If I ran a 4.2 in 1989 I'm talking all my s***, each and every week,, cause I know nobody can stop me 🤷🏿♂️ .. or I can take the Jerry Rice route. Duality. What’s the use with talking shit? It’s not professional or humble. Unsportsmanlike. Why not be Bavaro and be the silent beast? You are paid the same either way, that’s for sure. Why not be Deion? Personal preference.

Right? if anyone is hanging their head a month away from training camp, they have not been paying attention to what has been going on here. I listen to the coaches speak and the players respond on all the teams and I begin to feel bad. Because we are ass and nobody looks like they are ready to step up and be an example. It doesn’t look like anyone is interested in football or winning. It looks like they love themselves too much to worry about what others feel. The paying fans. The players are like…just shut up and pay me. I still hold our team to the old standards and that is where I am wrong I guess. I don’t feel the same about players now like I did about the old guys. I don’t even particularly even want to like them. They don’t show me any reason. Maybe I just shouldn’t watch I guess. Certainly it’s up to you whether or not to lose interest in the team but one thing is for sure. Last year the the Giants started out 1-7 and finished 5-3. That doesn’t have the look of a team that lost interest or was just cashing a check.

I’m not reading anything. I’m talking about how I feel comparing players now to what I’m watching on NFL right now. I like America’s Game and the Missing Rings. Our guys from the 80s were better. Our coaches were better. We won two championships since then. Against a better opponent, and we didn't win on any miraculous missed chip shot FG attempts. Again, you like the good days? Then you take the bad ones too. 47 yarder on grass is not a chip shot with the SB on the line in front of millions of people. He hadn’t made a FG that long all year. Do you really think that trophy in 90 is tarnished in any way? www.democratandchronicle.com/story/sports/columnist/roth/2016/02/20/roth-norwood-splits-uprights-life/80579612/Actually, in an unrelated story to your comment, Norwood seems like quite a guy and has handled the situation admirably.

So you like this pussy shit we see every week? I'm pretty sure ANY current NFL player could kick your ass. Current? Maybe. But I’d take my chances against Garo Yepremian. He’s got to be pushing 80 now. Never mind, I just googled him to make sure. He died 6 years ago. R.I.P. Big G.

I still see players every week getting hit hard and giving hard hits. Things in the game have changed for sure but overall but its still a very tough game that has bad injuries pretty much every week

I know, right? Respect for private property….geez. It just had nothing to with a thing in the thread, nothing. I know, I know…but I figure since it’s my thread I’d just go along and joke about it. I’ve had enough arguments with a few certain guys on these boards.

NFL Network running the America’s Game Marathon and I’m watching the 1986 Giants. Just got done watching the 1985 Bears. All I can do is shake my head. I miss these teams so much. The coaching speeches, the player attitudes. Nothing “ME” first. I don’t care what people say…it was A LOT different. It makes me think, man, watching these kids on Sundays these days is almost like a friggin chore. I cringe when I think what we are in store for this year when we got guys like Toney that are going to come out on the field. Like I said, all I do these days is hang my head….with the memories of what we had once, and looking at these jackass kids now. Whether we like it or not, these players are representing us and our team looks like a trash organization because of it. A lot of mouth…a lot of antics and dropped passes. Just an embarrassment. Coaches come here and act and talk tough, but they ain’t disciplinarians for real. And these young players don’t have the respect for the authority….all they know is money. Vet back than . Football was sports entertainment. It catered to the Football fan. Today's Football is pure entertainment. The NFL would not be a money making machine if it was just Football. Everything about it is to bring the non-sports fans under the umbrella.

And for one thing, you aren’t even guaranteed your favorite player will even be there next year. Not like the old days before Plan B. I have adopted the idea of just wearing a Giants sweatshirt or something that doesn’t designate a name or number. I remember I had a Kannell Jersey and when he left and Warner came, I took the name off and went to the sporting goods store and had them iron Warner on it. VOILA!!!! Free Warner Jersey!

Guess what? Everybody you just mentioned pulled their weight and put it all on the line. The old saying is put up or shut up, no? I don’t hang my head because of good football players. Yet, I will agree that personal off field issues are a tragedy in some cases. They still do. As much as I disliked players like Beckham, he completely put it on the line come Sunday. You can't tell me the effort on the field is any less today. I loved Beckham. I also didn't like all the nonsense but he was the best player on the team for 3-4 years. Not even close. He played hard and wanted to win as much or more than anyone. His teammates loved him especially the WR corp. Shep was upset he was gone. I bet Eli was too though I don't remember him saying anything. I still root for him I think and hope he is going to have a big year in Cleveland this season.

It comes off as petty and penis envy. They act like he urinated in their face instead of their cereal.

I take this challenge. There are a ton of NFL players and I find it hard to believe that every single one of them could kick my ass. Hell I bet USMCVET could probably hold his own against Tom Brady. I'll take on Devonta Smith. I got him by a good 40+ pounds and if I get a hold of his leg it's over lmao.
Call the press and set up the tag team match. Tom Brady and Mike Nugent vs IrishMike and USMCVET. As long as Nugent doesn't land a kick and Brady doesn't land a kiss we should win this match.
Screw it! I’m in! You motivated me! Hoorah!!!!! My advice is to start with the kickers...

Same years as my brother. John is that you? lmao. I was 99-04.
I was just flipping through youtube and listening to music and I noticed that each generation of music is the same. The exact same comments are there for the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s 90s ect. "Wow this music was the best, nothing even comes close, they won't ever make music like this again".
Cool…I was at Lejeune in 2/2 and 1/2. Where were you guys at? By your reasoning, I had it decades tougher and meaner. I was in 58-61. Okinawa and Lejeune.

Players feel more empowered to stand up for themselves than they did back then. They know what's up more today. They are the ones who could get paralyzed on any play. They are the ones who played for free in high school and college, bringing untold amounts of money to local economies. They are the ones whose jerseys are purchased. They are the ones fans show up to see. They are the ones eating a strict diet and hitting the weight and film rooms constantly. And yet, they are underpaid (in the context of how much money the NFL makes that is), can have their careers end at any minute, and, in the case of players of color, the majority of the league, do not see many people that look like them in coaching, management, or ownership positions.
The player empowerment era is upon us my friends. Though it comes with some really annoying moments (players doing stupid-ass first down celebrations, for example) it is, in my opinion, better for the sport.

The NHL culture still embraces yesteryear today. Humble when you win, upset when you lose. There really isn't a look at me or being chatty with the opponent after a loss besides quickly in the hand shake line to end a series. With ESPN on board, it will be interesting ihow they market the teams. Will they take a page from the NFL and try making the players bigger than they are? Should be interesting although any player celebrating themselves despite their team getting blasted i doubt is on the radar.

Personally, i think the players were more aware and better prepared. Today, b/c Belichick is more of a throwback, i think he better educates his players and they win often on smarts and awareness. Hoping Judge has the same effect.

You could see it written all over his face most times.

Hoping Judge has the same effect. It's fine to think the game was better back then, that's your opinion, and a valid one. What I think is ridiculous is complaining that the game and players have changed since then. Change is inevitable. People think differently now than they did 40 years ago. The sport has changed dramatically, and is much more lucrative than before. There is more data and publicity on player health, concussions, injuries. Players want to come out of the NFL as healthy as possible, they want a life outside of football. There are a lot more advertising deals for players. I just think it's unhealthy to keep looking back and wishing things were like they were. Not everything was better back then. You have to accept the change and go with it. I don't know, that's just what I try to do, it just creates a lot less stress.
