Oh the game has changed but maybe not for the better. At least not for me. I felt men were playing in those games, today its boys. Sure they are bigger, stronger and faster today but the mental make up is much weaker. I'll take Ronnie Lott and Mark Bavaro over any player you can think of today. I can name players back then who had real balls. Today there snowflakes....much of them. Today its all about scoring lots of points and letting the defense play with one hand tied behind its back. Oh and your not allowed to touch the QB. Yes the new NFL for pussies. What's next 2 hand touch?

The only person that affects is yourself. Accept the changes and move on. The less stress in life, the better, and why get so upset about things that you can't control, and are, in relative terms, unimportant to your life?

The game was better then. Personally, i think the players were more aware and better prepared. Today, b/c Belichick is more of a throwback, i think he better educates his players and they win often on smarts and awareness. Hoping Judge has the same effect. It's fine to think the game was better back then, that's your opinion, and a valid one. What I think is ridiculous is complaining that the game and players have changed since then. Change is inevitable. People think differently now than they did 40 years ago. The sport has changed dramatically, and is much more lucrative than before. There is more data and publicity on player health, concussions, injuries. Players want to come out of the NFL as healthy as possible, they want a life outside of football. There are a lot more advertising deals for players. I just think it's unhealthy to keep looking back and wishing things were like they were. Not everything was better back then. You have to accept the change and go with it. I don't know, that's just what I try to do, it just creates a lot less stress. not sure if you were around in the 80’s. Not only is the NFL a worse product but so is the NBA and nobody could care less about the Olympics. The OP hangs his head in shame while i believe many aren’t looking back with an unhealthy state if mind due to change. We just don’t care as much b/c the game isn’t as good. I don’t blame the new audience which has only been exposed to this NFL marketing machine.

I have a choice to watch or not watch. I am pointing out to many the obvious if you we around back in the 60's thru the 80s'. The game is watered down.

I’m paraphrasing.. “I would send him to the hospital on the next series.” If the league waters it down anymore, it will become a Diet drink..

It’s hard to let go of something I once really enjoyed. I felt connected to those players…loved those guys. I don’t have any feeling whatsoever to this “new breed”…. Haven’t for some time now. I think the last Giant I really enjoyed watching was Shockey.

Game changes as do all things, accept it and remember this is "all" just entertainment I didn’t think of it as entertainment. Still don’t. Like I said I am with the old times and back then, you stood for something. Just something about the way Carson and L.T and everybody stood together looking downfield at the opponents…all the guys together seeing things the same way. If you were on the other side looking back, you knew you were going to get your ass kicked.

Offense puts butts in the seats. Defense, wins championships. The Giants back bone to the days of leather helmets has always been their defense. We started the “defense” chants that’s heard in every stadium in professional sports.

I was recently watching some old games from the 80s and early 90s. The game was a bit different, no doubt...its evolving like everything else.
What I kept thinking though, was how much more athletic the players are today. If those old offenses came out and tried to run their gameplan against a defense in today's NFL they'd get embarrassed; enhanced safety rules and all.
If anything, I truly believe today's players are more committed and put in more work. It's out of competitive necessity. Players are getting bigger, stronger, and faster as we are continuing to gain more and more knowledge about physical training and diet that further increases the gap between what is and what was physically possible.
Rosy retrospection is the psychological term that describes what the op is experiencing, and it's a point of view with no logical basis.
In addition, as others have pointed out, it has those 'get off my lawn' vibes as well. It's the same as 'shut up and dribble'. This mentality is rooted in white conservative culture, and certainly has a tinge of racism whether we all want to acknowledge it or not. With the internet, and virtually unlimited television access, we are much more exposed to athletes and their personalities today. Due to the demographics that make up the majority of pro sports teams outside of hockey, this is clearly very triggering to some people.

NFL Network running the America’s Game Marathon and I’m watching the 1986 Giants. Just got done watching the 1985 Bears. All I can do is shake my head. I miss these teams so much. The coaching speeches, the player attitudes. Nothing “ME” first. I don’t care what people say…it was A LOT different. It makes me think, man, watching these kids on Sundays these days is almost like a friggin chore. I cringe when I think what we are in store for this year when we got guys like Toney that are going to come out on the field. Like I said, all I do these days is hang my head….with the memories of what we had once, and looking at these jackass kids now. Whether we like it or not, these players are representing us and our team looks like a trash organization because of it. A lot of mouth…a lot of antics and dropped passes. Just an embarrassment. Coaches come here and act and talk tough, but they ain’t disciplinarians for real. And these young players don’t have the respect for the authority….all they know is money. ...Things change in 35yrs

They really couldn't care less about catering to anyone older than that because those types are already sold. The game will continue to evolve and players will continue to market themselves on all platforms. If a person can't get on board with the change, that person will just get left behind. They don't have to like the changes, but they have no choice but to accept them.

Put that Cowboys OL vs these awful tackling defenses and they’ll run right through them. The 90’s 49ers were a machine. Todays QB from the pass happy offenses would never stay healthy vs yesterday’s defenses. That’s why he rules were changed in the first place.

He’s turned this thread into an agenda by accusing it of being somewhat racist. So far off base it isn’t even funny. He’s throwing terms around like “white conservatism” around and the shit has absolutely nothing to do with football then or football now. Ignore him.

You would have to ask him for more clarity. What I think he is trying to say is that some of the criticism of today's game and its players has racial tones to it. I do think that is true, but I also think it isn't right to feel that all of the criticism comes from that.

The players were better. I like chocolate ice cream….I don’t like vanilla ice cream. So is that wrong too? F this guy, I’m not even going to consider his agenda.

Congratulations for being married. Your wife being black doesnt change how I interpret your comments. Chris Doleman came out and said almost the exact same thing you said, and he is black. I used the word 'tinge' because it's subtle. Im not accusing you of being a hateful bigot, so relax....just providing context to where this mentality comes from. This same conversation has been going on since pro sports were integrated, and is certainly rooted in racism. It uses the same sentiments that we express when we describe athletes, and I think its partially born out of an inferiority complex when it comes to sports. Generally speaking, a black athlete who is 'quick' and 'strong' might be described as having a 'high motor' and being 'hard nosed' if they were white. That's essentially what you're pining for isn't it? Hard nosed players with a high motor? 🤔

I don't see how a preference to 80's football, specifically the great Giants team of the 80's, indicates any ulterior motive. I support your opinion and think you should not even entertain this kind of hypersensitive cancel culture nonsense.

The indisputable facts is that we will never see that game again with the rule changes and hyper athletes that play today and what is also being produced in college. Those that want to watch 2 team smashing large slow backs into a brick wall all day in a 9-6 type game in this era with 15 total foward passes between both teams go watch highlights of Woody Hayes Buckeyes vs the Michigan Wolverines from the 70s ..
I mean I miss mud and dirt... Unfortunately even tbe natural surfaces are "clean " and they are using "clean dirt " it seems when Fields are all ripped up by December
It is what it is
It's a totally different game .... Evolve or die I'm glad this team finally realized this in March and April

I don’t feel that it was fair for this poster to take my conversation and reroute it to serve him and his agenda. This guy is out to put words in people’s mouths and hateful feelings in people’s heads. I prefer the old game and players. I also prefer medium rare steaks to well done. I like Coke over Pepsi. And I hate spinach and broccoli. So because of all my preferences should I be persecuted? If anyone else agrees with me and hates broccoli should they also suffer the wrath? F this! You can’t force somebody to like something or eat or drink something or watch or listen to something unless they want to. And if they don’t want to, you can’t automatically say that you are a bad person. I’m friggin mad.

Hoping fantasy evolves so we get points allocated towards players who participated in a celebration without actually scoring.
- 1 point for jumping into the stands - 1.5 points for a new dance - 2 points for a backflip - 3 point if the entire team can be seen in an end-zone selfie celebration
Have to evolve

We had Rice, Atwater, Lott, Monk, Largent, Toon, Nattiel…shit load others. They just so happened to be on other teams. They could have easily been on any other team, including ours. So the whole league wasn’t boring as you say.
